Q: Is our wood sustainable?
A:  All of the wood we use is responsibly sourced and are not listed in the CITES Appendices and are reported by the UICN as being species of least concern.

Q: How does wood shrink and move over time?
A:  Wood shrinks in three different aspects while it dries to the equilibrium of the local environment.  Using a 6” x 8” x 16’ timber as an example, longitudinal shrinkage would be the timber shrinking from 16’ in length to 15’ 15/16”.  Radial shrinkage would be the 6” x 8” timber measurements shrinking to 5-13/16” x 7-3/4”.  These changes in dimensions greatly affect the tight-fitting joints.  Not knowing and understanding this will cause your once tight joints to open up and create unsightly gaps.  Tangential shrinkage is the circumferential length of the annual rings (winter growth & summer growth) shrinking.  This is visible in the form of checks, which are crack that form on bigger timbers along their length.  This is completely normal and does not affect the structural integrity of the timber in any way.  I have been in old timber frame buildings that I could stick my hand inside a check.

Q: If we move can our pergola come with us?
A:  Yes!  Since our structure are prebuilt in our wood shop and assembled on site, technically they can be disassembled and relocated to another place on your property, or to your new home if the need arises.

Q: Rough Sawn vs Smooth Timber?
A:  Being that most of our projects are outdoors, most clients elect for the rough sawn wood, for its rugged timber feel.  The often overlooked advantage of rough sawn timber is that the timber, paint, oil and stain, will last about 20% longer than smooth sawn timbes.  This is due to the multidimensional surface of the wood shading the crevices throughout the day and reducing the UV exposure.  Smooth sawn timbers provide a completely different feel to the project.  Depending on the existing architecture, they can provide a much more elegant and modern aesthetics.  Smooth sawn lumber starts as a rough sawn timber and is then sent through a planer to remove the rough texture.

Q: Structure Placement?
A:  We take the orientation of our structures, in relation to the sun, seriously.  We know the suns direction towards your project for every day in history.  What we need to know from you is what time of day, and what time of year you would like the most shade or weather protections.  We take this into account when we are recommending which way the structure will face.  We will inform you of our aesthetic and sun protection preferences when designing your project.  Note that this change in orientation can sometimes affect the pricing of a structure.
